School profile

William Perkin Church of England High School

William Perkin is built on the belief that we are all constantly improving- staff and students think deeply about what they do, how they can share their strengths with others, and how they can improve areas for development. This leads to us all being very reflective about our teaching practice (no matter how much experience we have), as well as leading to high levels of collaboration both within and between departments. We provide a fantastic environment for teacher training. The departmental and whole school resources are excellent, from outstanding lesson plans which trainees can learn from, to planning and marking structures and resources which support trainees to learn excellent practice. In addition, we have clear behaviour and organisational expectations of the students, which are used consistently across the school to great effect. This means that trainees will have a multitude of opportunities to see great teachers in action, and they can learn about teaching in an environment which allows them to develop their experience rather than only focusing on managing learning behaviour.

A large proportion of the staff in each department are experienced mentors, allowing us to pair trainees with staff who are knowledgeable both about the best ways to help trainees to develop, as well as about managing the logistics that come with the teacher training year. Our whole school training programmes are outstanding. Trainees have their own dedicated weekly sessions on topics such as “Effective starters”, “Marking and feedback” and “Differentiation and questioning”, and this year we have also introduced a focus on managing wellbeing during the training year. Trainees will also have the opportunity to work with staff across the school through our all-staff Teaching and Learning Clusters (groups of staff who informally observe each other and discuss all of the great practice that they want to steal), and through a host of other optional training opportunities in the school and across our school Trust too.
